Part 11
Simon
Jesus' disciple Simon (Simon) was called "the Zealot" (the Zealot).
Simon (the Zealot) was one of Jesus' twelve disciples, chosen by Jesus himself to be his follower. He is listed as one of the disciples in both Matthew and Mark (Matthew 10:4; Mark 3:18).
Simon is known as "The Zealot", which may have something to do with the political organization he originally belonged to. The Zealots were a Jewish political faction at the time dedicated to rebelling against Roman rule and striving for Jewish independence. After following Jesus, however, Simon turned his attention to spiritual matters.
While details of Simon's (zealot's) ministry are unclear, historical records indicate that he was involved in missionary work in early Christianity. He probably joined Jesus and other disciples in evangelizing, spreading Jesus' teachings to more people.
Simon (Zemen) has relatively few records in the Bible, and it must be distinguished from another disciple, Simon Peter (known as Simon). The same name can lead to some confusion, so Simon (The Zealot) usually uses his alias "The Zealot" to distinguish them.
