What the Bible Teaches About Speech
Speak Words of Encouragement
The Bible encourages believers to use their words to build up and encourage others. Ephesians 4:29 says, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." This teaches us to be mindful of the impact our words can have on others and to use them in a positive and uplifting manner.
The Bible teaches us to speak the truth in love. Ephesians 4:15 says, "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ." This emphasizes the importance of balancing honesty with kindness and compassion in our communication.
Guard Your Tongue
The Bible warns against the dangers of an uncontrolled tongue. James 3:5-6 says, "Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body." This reminds us to be mindful of the impact our words can have and to exercise self-control in our speech.
The Bible recognizes the power of words to bring healing and restoration. Proverbs 12:18 states, "The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." This teaches us to use our words wisely and to speak words of comfort, understanding, and reconciliation.
Avoid Harmful and Idle Words
The Bible warns against using words that are harmful, deceitful, or idle. Matthew 12:36-37 states, "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." This reminds us of the importance of speaking with integrity and avoiding gossip, slander, or any form of speech that can cause harm.
These teachings emphasize the importance of using our words wisely, speaking with love and kindness, and being mindful of the impact our words can have on others. By using our words to encourage, speak truth, bring healing, and build up others, we can cultivate healthy and positive relationships.
