Part 3
Jesus Walking on Water
The miracle of Jesus walking on water is a well-known story found in the Gospels of Matthew (14:22-33), Mark (6:45-52), and John (6:16-21).
After feeding the multitude with five loaves of bread and two fish, Jesus instructed his disciples to get into a boat and go ahead of him to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. He dismissed the crowds and went up onto a mountainside to pray alone.
Meanwhile, the disciples encountered strong winds and rough waves as they were crossing the sea. In the fourth watch of the night, between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him, they were terrified, thinking it was a ghost. Jesus reassured them, saying, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
Peter, filled with both faith and doubt, replied, "Lord, if it's you, command me to come to you on the water." Jesus responded, "Come."
Peter stepped out of the boat and started walking on the water toward Jesus. However, as he noticed the strong wind, he became afraid and began to sink. He cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately, Jesus reached out his hand and caught Peter, saying, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" They both got into the boat, and the wind ceased. The disciples worshiped Jesus, declaring him to be the Son of God.
This miraculous event demonstrated Jesus' divine power over nature. By walking on water, he defied the laws of physics and displayed his authority over creation. This awe-inspiring act revealed his identity as the Son of God and strengthened the disciples' faith.
Peter's interaction with Jesus during this miracle is also significant. His initial step of faith, walking on the water, illustrates the potential of unwavering trust in Jesus. However, his doubt and fear caused him to falter. Jesus' response highlights the importance of faith in overcoming doubts and challenges.
This miracle serves as a powerful metaphor for the Christian journey. The boat symbolizes the worldly struggles and challenges we face, while the sea represents the storms of life. Jesus walking on water demonstrates that he is always present with us, even in the midst of difficulties. It encourages believers to have faith in Jesus, despite the surrounding circumstances, knowing that he has the power to rescue and save.
The story of Jesus walking on water continues to inspire and provide comfort to Christians, reminding them of the incredible miracles and divine presence in their lives. It encourages them to trust in Jesus, no matter how turbulent life may become, and to rely on his strength and guidance to navigate through the challenges they encounter.
