Jesus Transfiguration
The story of Jesus' transfiguration is a significant event recorded in the New Testament of the Bible. It is found in the Gospel accounts of Matthew 17:1-8, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9:28-36.
Jesus took Peter, James, and John, three of his closest disciples, up a high mountain. While they were on the mountain, Jesus was transfigured before them. His appearance changed and became radiant, with his face shining like the sun and his clothes becoming dazzling white. Alongside Jesus, Moses and Elijah appeared and were talking with him.
The disciples were astonished and fearful at this extraordinary sight. Peter, in his excitement, suggested building three shelters, one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. But while he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him, I am well pleased. Listen to him!" Hearing this, the disciples fell facedown in awe and fear.
Afterward, when the vision had ended, Jesus instructed the disciples not to tell anyone what they had seen until after his resurrection. As they descended from the mountain, Jesus told them to keep this event a secret for the time being.
The transfiguration of Jesus holds several meanings:
1. Confirmation of Jesus' Divinity: Jesus' transfiguration revealed his divine nature and glory. His radiant appearance and the appearance of Moses and Elijah affirmed that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets, representing the continuity between the Old Testament and the New Testament.
2. Foreshadowing the Resurrection: The transfiguration served as a preview of Jesus' resurrected and glorified state. It provided a glimpse of his future glory and victory over sin and death.
3. The Father's Approval: The voice from the cloud, identified as God the Father, affirmed that Jesus is his beloved Son and commanded the disciples to listen to him. This declaration emphasized Jesus' authority and the necessity of following his teachings.
4. Strengthening for the Disciples: The transfiguration was a significant event for the three disciples who witnessed it. It strengthened their faith and prepared them for the difficult times ahead, particularly Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection.
The transfiguration showcased Jesus' divine glory, affirmed his identity as the Son of God, and provided encouragement and confirmation for his disciples. It served as a pivotal moment in the ministry of Jesus, pointing towards his ultimate purpose of salvation and resurrection.
