Part 6
Fulfillment of Love to Practice the Ten Commandments More Completely
The fulfillment of love in the New Testament leads to a more complete practice of the commandments. Jesus Christ taught us that true fulfillment of the law is accomplished through love.
In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." Jesus explicitly stated that loving God and loving others are the overarching principles that summarize the commandments.
Through love, we are able to more fully practice the meaning and requirements of the commandments. For example, when we truly love God, we will worship only the true God, not worship idols, and not take the Lord's name in vain because we value our relationship with God. When we love others as ourselves, we will respect their lives, refrain from harming them, stealing from them, lying to them, or coveting their possessions, because we care for their well-being.
Jesus further emphasized the fulfillment of love in Matthew 5. He taught that true fulfillment of the law goes beyond mere avoidance of sinful actions; it involves purifying the motives and attitudes of our hearts. He said, "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder.'… But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!' shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of hell fire." (Matthew 5:21-22) This demonstrates that the law of love extends not only to outward behavior but also to the thoughts, intentions, and attitudes we have towards others.
Through the fulfillment of love-centered laws, we are able to more completely practice the commandments. The fulfillment of love goes beyond mere adherence to surface-level rules; it requires us to demonstrate genuine care and concern for God and others in our hearts, emotions, and actions. Through love, we gain a deeper understanding and practice of the principles of the commandments, making them the guiding principles and standards of our lives.
